Important Announcement from Chrissi Kelly, Chair of AbScent: Closure of AbScent

Dear AbScent Community,

Over the past few years, AbScent has been dedicated to supporting individuals experiencing the loss of smell and taste. We have striven to create a community where those affected could find solace, understanding, and resources to cope with the challenges of anosmia.

The financial difficulties faced by the charity have been insurmountable, and despite our best efforts, we must cease our activities as a registered charity.  However, some of our services will be picked up in other ways outside of AbScent.

Like many charities, we have been facing the impact of the current economic climate which, alongside other unforeseen challenges, have impeded our ability to sustain AbScent’s aims.  Despite changes made to our services a few months ago, we simply can’t cut costs further without making it impossible to deliver against our goals.

My work with this community started in 2015.  I have been a volunteer and never taken pay for anything I do. Many people anticipate that AbScent was run entirely by volunteers, however running a charity as far reaching as ours meant hiring people, and we achieved a lot with a small team. We supported over 90,000 people internationally across several platforms at the height of the pandemic, and we became a go-to resource for the international media, researchers and clinicians. Any money that has come in through the shop or events has supported the running costs of AbScent.

It is with sadness that we announce that the registered charity AbScent will close on the 29th February, 2024, and our online store will close at the end of January.

Some of my work will continue.

My presence in the AbScent Network, which will have a name change in the New Year, will go on. There, I plan to continue my own patient-centred work: running the Network and events, and interacting with you to answer your questions and direct you to the resources that you need. You’ll hear more about this soon. For those of you who only use the Network, nothing will change, and I will continue inviting new people in to help them with everything that goes with smell loss.

The AbScent Newsletter will cease, but you can sign up for my personal newsletter containing similar news and updates at

I also encourage you to explore these alternative avenues for assistance in coping with smell and taste loss:

  • Purchase smell training kits from Scent Recover – the AbScent community can get 15% off their first purchase using code ABSCENT15
  • Get the latest in taste and smell science from the Monell Center or STANA
  • For updates directly from Chrissi on news, research and upcoming events sign up to Chrissi’s newsletter

I want to express my deepest appreciation to each and every one of you who has been a part of the AbScent community – from our dedicated team members past and present, passionate volunteers, and generous donors to the individuals who have sought support from our services. Your contributions – most critically, sharing your stories– have made a profound impact, and I am immensely grateful for the connections and relationships we’ve built together.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out via email to before 29th February 2024.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Chrissi Kelly
