AbScent was founded by Chrissi Kelly following her own experience of smell loss after a virus in 2012. It became an internationally recognised resource for people living with anosmia, parosmia, and other smell disorders, receiving referrals from the NHS, the Mayo Clinic, and media organisations worldwide.
This site holds a substantial library of information on smell and taste loss: guidance on smell training, causes and types of smell disorder, research summaries, and practical advice for managing daily life. Smell training is the only evidence-based intervention for post-viral smell loss, recommended by the British Rhinological Society.
Smell loss affects an estimated five percent of the population in the UK, approximately 3.3 million people. It is more common than most people realise, and its impact extends beyond the sensory loss itself, affecting appetite, nutrition, safety, and mental health. Recovery is possible for many people, and smell training is the starting point for most.
AbScent’s library of articles, research summaries, and practical guides was built over more than a decade in partnership with leading scientists, clinicians, and thousands of people with lived experience of smell disorders. It remains here, free to access, for as long as it is needed.
